Proof of the PSR by Maclain Hunter

Definition of the PSR:

The Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR) is a rational principle stating that everything that exists or occurs must have an ultimate Reason (Explanation; Cause; Logos). Formulated by Leibniz, it asserts that there are no "brute facts" (or illogical logical truths) in reality without contradiction. It means that for any given fact or Truth, there is Logos backing it and a sufficient explanation for why it is the way it is and not otherwise, falling back on non-contradiction as the universal bedrock of why P is P and P is not “not P”.

Premises:

P: Assume the PSR is not a logical rule/principle, but a mere assertion or invalid.

Q: If sufficient Reason (Logos; Coherence) isn’t needed for Coherence (Logic; Reason) then there is no PSR and Coherence doesn’t have to (sufficiently) be Coherence to be Coherence which leads to contradiction, supporting the PSR.

R: P is refuted by Q and combine to proof for the contradiction supporting the PSR as a logical rule even derivable/confirmed by way of its denial.

S: The claim that I need reasoning/proof to back the PSR presupposes the PSR and doesn’t hold of a rule such as the PSR doesn’t hold. The very request for proof of the PSR (to support it) is a concession of the PSR that suggests proof/reasoning (or Reason; or Coherence) is called for.

T: If the PSR were not a logical rule (universally applicable to systems of Logic, statements of fact, positions denying concepts exist such as atheism, etc.) then there wouldn’t be a need for proof of logical rules in general, since no other common logical rule or substantively/substantially different logical rule suggests Logic and logical claims must meet a burden of proof and a Standard of reasoning.

U: Given T and denial of the PSR, the PSR could arbitrarily without sufficient Reason be established as a logical rule still - displaying its tautological self-support (and the support gained from even denial) that true logical rules like the LNC and True Logic (Logos; the One God) enjoy.

Formal Proof:

{P, P -> Q, (P & Q) -> R, S, S -> T, (S & T) -> U} |= U

Conclusion: U

Elaboration:

The PSR (which requires alignment with Logic in the sense of consistency not an arbitrary number of finite reasons, though a number of finite reasons can help establish logical consistency) is logically mandated and genuine logical rule, as demonstrated given {P, Q, R, S, T, U}.

The PSR can be understood as an (also) “elenctic” mode of Logos, Logic, and the LNC, where the LNC wards any “Reason without alignment with Reason/reasoning” and the PSR is the Law that comes from the LNC as Law applying in that “possessive mode” of Logic - where Reason is either possessed or it’s not and it needs to be possessed to not be lacked.

Brute fact is not logical as it doesn’t have explanation (or Logic backing it), making it self-refuting. Beyond that it is refuted positively by Logos providing Universal Logic and an ultimate/foundational and non-contradictory explanation for all logically conceivable concepts. That steals every opportunity away from brute fact (which is itself explainable as an incoherent notion that arises from the limited logical grasp of the contingent and finite mind and its poor reasoning or laziness in explaining Reality and isn’t even itself a brute fact) to be the ultimate and only Ground of fundamental nature of something.

Even brute fact’s ultimate Ground is Logos, and even brute fact’s fundamental nature is “incoherence within Logos/Logic” not actual brute fact (sans Logos and incoherence).

The PSR notoriously, to atheists chagrin and to the dismay of even certain “irrational theists”, requires not only “a universal cause” (a god of arbitrary kind) for the Cosmos, the Logos based Universe (or Order Based Reality; or Ordered Reality), but that the Universal Cause or “True God” (referring to: the genuine Source of Existence; the Genuine Moral Standard; the logically true Ultimate Reality) is 100% coherent with and logically equivalent to Reason/Logic (the Logos at the Foundation of the Cosmos; the God of Reason) itself.

An incoherent notion of any concept including the Universal Cause (or God) does not satisfy Logic (or Logos) and gain the rational support required to meet the bar of the PSR.

Proof of the Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR) by Maclain Hunter:

Definitions of Key Terms:

Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR): The logical principle that everything must have Reason/Cause for its existence—an explanation why things are the way they are—which Logic (Universal Cause, also called God or the Logos, and the coherent Source of Knowledge) and the Law of Identity ultimately provide for all things.

Logic: The systematic method of reasoning that governs the principles of valid inference and demonstration, serving as the framework for coherent thought and understanding; Proper Reason, Order, reasoning, and ordering; the Source of Knowledge in coherent thought.

God: The Ultimate Reality (that which Reality itself is the state of) and Supreme Being; the Origin and Ruler of the Universe; the Source of Moral Authority and Existence.

Logos: A term derived from Greek philosophy meaning "Reason” or “Universal Logic” (the Natural Order); the Rational Principle that governs the Cosmos, synonymous with Divine Reason and the Foundation of Logical Structure.

Cause: The REASON or factor that brings something into existence or produces an effect; in philosophical terms, it refers to the underlying explanation for why an event occurs; the maker or force that makes something be what it is.

Reality: The state of things as they actually exist, encompassing all entities, events, and phenomena that can be observed or inferred to exist.

Premises:

P: The Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR) is what it is, this is tautological that PSR is PSR, and this tautological identity is coherent with Logic—which gives logical explanations for all things within the Logical Framework known as “Reality” (or the Cosmos), as a matter of coherent logical structure and interconnection/connections—which is logically coherent itself with “Cause” (the thing that makes things be things).

S: The PSR being coherent with Cause, including Universal Cause, as a logical con so that “makes things be things” or which “demands things be logical and have Logic/Cause underlying it”, is coherent with and consistent with the Logos, and rational conceptions of the Origin of Existence (called “God” in English, going by the dictionary definition of the term “God” - referring to the thing that made the Universe and the Moral Authority or Supreme Being). In other words, the Real Origin (True God) is the Reason/Cause/Logic underlying the Cosmos and embodied in the Ordered Universe (Cosmos) and is coherent with coherent Reason and reasoning (Logic) as a matter of logical necessity.

R: Assume ~P and ~S. That leads to logical contradiction and a denial of the PSR and logical rules and deductions that led to the formal establishment of it as a logical principle - coherent with Logic’s Essence (Logos - Divine Cause). If the PSR, Logic, and the Foundation of Existence were at all incoherent it would be the understanding of logical principles we have that would need to dynamically adapt to the Foundation of Existence (First Cause - God), not the Foundation (God - the First Cause of Reason and Logic) that can, would, or should change.

Formal Argument (Logical Proof):

{P, P <-> S, S <-> R} |= (P & Q) <-> R

Conclusion: {P, S, R}:

If we assume there is no Logos (or God) and no PSR then we, consistent with that, need no CAUSE to say this proof is proof and as valid as anything can be. We would also not then need Cause (Logos) or proof for anything since it’s not a Universal Cause, Demand, and Standard (as I posit the Logos actually is).

It would mean, since the very Universe is based on nothing and can arbitrarily call itself into existence without “Logical Structure and Demand” (Logos - Cause - Logic - Divine Reason), that my philosophy would also need no proof. I of course don’t believe that as this proof is evidence of. This proof is itself evidence that there is Logic and is the Logos (Logic’s self-consistent Source in itself) and that the PSR is well founded in Pure Reason (the Essence of Logic - Logos).

Some atheists do not like the PSR because it makes the argument for the Logos (God - Universal Cause) direct and logically impossible to defend against, but that is not valid REASON to deny the Logos (God) and the proofs based on the PSR that provide clean and clear logical proof for God (or other concepts). If the PSR, Logic, and the Origin of Existence (Logos - God) were incoherent that would be incoherent, and that is tautological (self-evident) and proven through this discrete proof (rigorous formal proof) to be so.

It is not that we are imposing a need on Reality that doesn’t exist with the PSR, but rather that we are imposing that requirement on human reasoning and our own subjective views. This works logically because being able to explain things requires Logical Structure (which Reality is characterized by) and being able to link our ideas (through reasons and reasoning) to this inherent Logical Structure of Reality (Logos) ensures that our ideas cohere with this Logical Structure (Logos), just as finding the pieces around a puzzle piece help us establish its place in the overall puzzle.

Addressing Counterarguments:

Any refutation of any argument requires Logic, and must be logically coherent to be valid, which subordinates even attempts at refutation to Logic and the Source of Logic (Logic - God - the First Cause of Logic and Existence also known as the Logos).

An alleged refutation that rejected Logic, would be illogical. An alleged refutation that rejected God would be ungodly and misaligned with the First Cause of Logic that is coherent with and can be referred to as both/either God and/or Logic.

An alleged refutation that rejected the PSR would be rejecting the need for Cause (Logic) which would leave even invalid ideas and proofs standing - which is an untenable position that destroys the ability to have knowledge and know Reality, Truth, Logic, and other necessities.

Refutation in any logical sense can be seen to be impossible as it would amount to trying to use valid Logic to refute the very existence and importance of valid Logic and what valid Logic entails (like the PSR and Logic itself, as well as all of Logical Existence and coherent notions of God).

PSR is a way of formalizing what is inherent in the Logical Structure of Reality (Logos - God) - structure/order that allows for direct causes and explanations of the rational structure/support of things (Universal Cause and/or local causes) to be seen and understood. It’s not that all is all because everything needs to have an arbitrary cause, it’s that Rational Cause causes all to be all including itself and can be seen and understood through/in Logic and the exploration of what caused what in the Universal Order.

Result: Validated logically, meticulously and with intellectual honesty by the logician (Maclain Hunter). Counterarguments have been shown to be futile/impossible making the conclusions logically certain.

## Two-way derivation from Logic and its use

**Status:** editorial_derivation proof sketch (conditional_concept), distinct from authored source. Logic has its own evidence in reflexive demonstration: any denial, confirmation, observation, or counterexample presupposes identity and valid relation to count as evidence. Logic therefore grounds evidence rather than receiving authority from it. Empirical and documentary evidence can establish contingent instances and test applications, but cannot create, overrule, or exhaust Logic.

### From Logic to this concept

- **Bridge premise:** Given the six stated premises and the displayed conditional relations, the asserted consequence U follows in classical propositional logic.
- **Consequence:** The formal argument is valid over all valuations of P, Q, R, S, T, and U, while its elaboration interprets sufficient Reason and Coherence as Logos.
- **Proof limit:** Connective validity does not prove each premise true, formalize every natural-language bridge, or independently establish the source's wider ontological conclusions.

### From this concept back to Logic

- **Witness:** Enumerate all 64 assignments and evaluate P ∧ (P → Q) ∧ ((P ∧ Q) → R) ∧ S ∧ (S → T) ∧ ((S ∧ T) → U); whenever that conjunction is true, U is true.
- **Disclosure:** Recognizing the result as an instance of valid entailment presupposes identity and lawful inference; the author then names their Ground as Logos.
- **Proof limit:** Only one assignment makes all six premises jointly true. Their correspondence to the authored natural-language meanings, including the relation between denial and conclusion, requires semantic validation beyond the truth-functional check.

### Intelligence procedure

- **Human:** Read the verbatim definitions and elaboration, reproduce the six-variable evaluation, and check each premise's semantic bridge before treating U as a grounded PSR result.
- **Machine:** Keep the original text, formal symbols, truth-table assignments, semantic interpretation, and system-validated proof status separately typed; never promote premise-conditional validity into truth of premises.

### Language and vocabulary procedure

- **Contrast:** A valid conditional argument says its conclusion follows if its premises hold; it does not by itself show that the premises hold or that every informal bridge is encoded.
- **Usage rule:** Attribute the six-premise argument and its Logos-grounded PSR interpretation to Hunter; name the formal result conditional validity unless all proof obligations are separately discharged.
- **Example:** The implication to U has no Boolean countermodel; premise truth and the connection from the denial of PSR to its conclusion remain separate questions.

## Semantic meaning frame

- **Role:** authored conditional entailment proof of the Principle of Sufficient Reason
- **Essence:** A six-proposition conditional argument for the PSR, accompanied by a truth table and ontological elaboration identifying ultimate Reason and Ground with Logos.
- **Logos relation:** The source identifies sufficient Reason, Coherence, Logic, and Logos as the ground that excludes brute fact and governs a coherent Universal Cause.
- **Retrieval aliases:** Proof of the PSR by Maclain Hunter · Principle of Sufficient Reason proof · PSR logical rule proof · proof of sufficient reason · brute fact and Logos · PSR truth table
- **Evidence modes:** verbatim authored source · independent 64-assignment truth-table evaluation · premise and semantic-bridge inspection · Ground and Coherence analysis

### Distinctions

- formal entailment is distinct from the truth of its premises
- semantic definitions of P through U are not supplied by the connective formula alone
- a represented conditional is not evidence that its antecedent is true
- source commentary extends beyond the entailment's syntactic content

## Coherence criterion

Preserve the author's complete source while distinguishing the displayed formula's valid conditional consequence from the interpretation, truth, and semantic bridges of its premises.

## Evidence boundary

The supplied first-party passage has been considered, vetted, and preserved; its displayed implication has been independently checked over all 64 Boolean assignments. It is classically valid; exactly one assignment satisfies all six listed premises, and that assignment makes U true. The verifier must inspect the proposition definitions, premise bridges, and conclusion directly. The formula evaluates P, Q, R, S, T, and U as independent atoms; it does not encode the semantic relation between P (assuming the PSR is not a logical rule) and the PSR-rule conclusion described in U, nor turn the natural-language refutation in Q/R into an explicit formal contradiction. Valid entailment establishes the conclusion conditional on all stated premises; it does not independently establish those premises or every ontological consequence in the elaboration. The source supplies 64 input rows without a legend mapping its intermediate columns to subexpressions; no intermediate cell-by-cell interpretation is asserted here.
